Warm, golden air fryer cornbread that’s crisp on the edges and fluffy in the center — a quick, nostalgic Southern classic without the oven.

  • Total Time: 20 minutes
  • Yield: 6 slices 1x

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup self-rising cornmeal
  • ½ cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 tablespoons sugar (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons melted butter (plus more for greasing the pan)
  • Optional: shredded cheddar, chopped jalapeños, or smoked paprika

Instructions

  1. In a bowl, whisk together buttermilk, egg, and melted butter.
  2. Stir in cornmeal, flour, and sugar until just combined.
  3. Grease a 6-inch round cake pan or oven-safe dish with butter or spray oil.
  4. Pour the batter into the pan and smooth the top.
  5. Preheat air fryer to 350°F.
  6. Place pan in air fryer basket and cook for 15–18 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  7. Let cool for 5 minutes before slicing. Serve warm.

Notes

Add cheddar and jalapeños for a spicy twist, or swap butter for bacon grease for rich flavor. Perfect served with chili, soup, or just a pat of butter and honey.
